Manly Yacht Club (MYC) is relaunching it's Manly Juniors Program

Manly Yacht Club (MYC) is relaunching it's Manly Juniors Program for Summer 2010/11.  The club recognises that it needs a vibrant and growing juniors programme so it can continue it's tradition of developing and promoting youth sailing in the community.

Many MYC and parent volunteers have been chipping away all winter to make sure the program starts on the front-foot come October.  The club purchased 5 new Optimist sailing dingies in August and a mystery club member has kindly donated an additional Optimist.  So the club will have a total of 14 Optimists, Pittwater Juniors and Manly Juniors in their dinghy fleet to begin the season.  This is very exciting as it means that a large number of kids will be able to sail for the season without having to buy a boat.  The club are also recruiting a qualified coach to lead the coaching sesions and mentor the kids through their sailing development.

The Manly Juniors Programme aims at making the sport of sailing accessible, safe and fun for families with or without a background in sailing.  It is provided through a partnership between Manly Yacht Club and the club’s approved sailing school - Manly Sailing. Children brand new to sailing are taught the basics of dinghy sailing by Manly Sailing.   As soon as a child reaches a Basic Level 1 proficiency they can join the club’s MYC Juniors team.  The whole programme will closely follow the Yachting Australia (YA) Getting into Small Boat Sailing syllabus.

Manly Sailing (school) run school holiday sailing camps and Saturday morning classes during school Terms 4 and 1.  They also provide courses for adults so Mums and Dads don’t have to miss out on the fun.  They are located on the club premises.

MYC Juniors provides coaching to develop kids from Basic Level 1 to basic racing ability and runs on Saturday afternoons of school Term 4 and 1. It is led by a Yachting Australia qualified sailing instructor with the assistance of parent volunteers. The coaching sessions will maintain high safety standards while focusing on fun and adventure to keep the kids engaged and maximise their development. All kids from ages 8 to 15 years are welcome.

The sport of sailing is extremely invigorating and rewarding.  To see your young child glide around the harbour mastering boat, rig and sails and the exhiliration in their face is a fantastic experience for a parent and even better for the child. The club wants to make sure it is doing all it can to bring the experience and skill of sailing to as many children as possible.
