How to maintain your shaft seals

There are many factors to maintaining shaft seals that can be used to ensure you don’t have to replace them too often. These tips can assist you in getting the most out of whatever you have to work with and can even save you money on unnecessary replacements.

Tighten Any Rings

You need to look for any rings around the shaft seal and tighten them to ensure that they are not rubbing or corroding any of the parts attached to them. You will have to be careful to ensure that you adjust your seals to where they will not become loose or at risk of weakening or wearing out. In addition to this all rings must also be appropriately sized. If any rings appear to have expanded or contracted over time then you will have to adjust them, or perhaps look at getting new ones in order to ensure that no leakage occurs.

Clean Off Any Clamps

If there are clamps or on your seals that need to be fixed or cleaned then you should take care of them as soon as possible. This is to make sure that you clear out any debris or other materials that may get in the way or could cause corrosion, and could damage the seal shaft. If there are any bits of debris inside your clamps then they will be at risk of wearing out quickly and causing damage. Your clamps have to be checked carefully so there will be no problems with having items becoming misaligned or struggling to operate.

Look For Sealants For Drips

The drips that can come from a shaft seal can be a sign that they are beginning to fail. You will have to check on the sealants that you hold and use them as needed on any seals that are leaking or causing a problem in any way. However, this can only really be done short term. In the long run it is far better to replace your seals if you notice any leakage. The quicker you can do this, the better to ensure that you’re not going to suffer any rust later on. However, for the short term you can always use sealants to take care of drips, just be sure you use a heavy duty one, designed for the application you need it for, and be sure to check regularly until you can get the leak fixed properly.

Check your lubrication

Seal shafts should always be well lubricated to ensure they are working efficiently for you. It’s wise to have on hand some good lubricant for those times where you notice that the lubrication has worn away, and it can help to prolong the life of your seals. It’s best to get your lubricant, and your seals for that matter from a reputable supplier, who has a good range of products for your needs and who can advise you on the best course of action for any repairs.

In short, maintaining your shaft seal will be more likely to ensure that you don’t have to replace the whole thing due to wear and tear, and it will likely ensure you don’t suffer rust due to leakage from the seals. If in doubt, it’s always best to ensure that you replace any parts that seem to be failing rather than risk a quick fix and end up with bigger problems later down the line.
