Boat “parked” on the road puzzles police

Trade Only Today. By Richard Armstrong.

An unusual scene near the corner of Indiana Avenue and Lake Michigan Drive in Grand Rapids, Mich., has police asking the public to help them figure out what happened.

A Grand Rapids police officer took a photo that shows a boat lying on its side on the city street, with no trailer or tow vehicle in sight. Police posted the photo on their Facebook page, asking the public to caption it appropriately.

Viewers were more than happy to oblige, generating as of this morning 653 likes, 505 shares and a host of witty comments such as:

“When the judge said she got half of everything …”

“Sorry, the tire went on my trailer. I’ll be back to get it next Saturday.”

“The sign said Lake Michigan Drive. I thought there’d be a place to drop anchor.”

“Should have made the payments on the trailer.”

“I was only doing 5 knots over the speed limit, officer.”

Police came upon the head-scratching scene on Tuesday. How the boat ended up in the road remains a mystery.

City police Lt. Theresa Budzilek told Soundings Trade Only this morning that the boat is sitting in a police impound, waiting for someone to claim it. She said the VIN number on the hull was traced to a former owner who said he sold it “many years ago.”
