Young woman dies after fall on charter yacht

A female crew member of the charter yacht SV Germania Nova is reported to be dead after a fall, presumably from the rigging, while the yacht was docked at the Errol Flynn Marina in Portland, Jamaica.

Eighteen-year-old Briton, Bethany Smith, was cleaning the mast on the yacht moored at the port, when she fell on to the deck. She sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Port Antonio Hospital, where she died while being treated.

An email from the charter and yacht manager, Hill Robinson, stated that next of kin have been notified and an investigation into the incident has been started.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and fellow crew members at this very difficult time,” stated the email. “Hill Robinson and the owners are doing everything possible to support the family and friends and of course an immediate investigation is already underway.”

According to the Charter World website, “the 55.42m luxury sailing yacht GERMANIA NOVA, built in 2011, is a replica of the Dr. Max Oertz designed and Krupp built racing schooner, Germania, from 1908. Sailing yacht GERMANIA NOVA has 13 crew and can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 beautiful cabins. Charter yacht GERMANIA NOVA offers both a smooth and relaxing sail and an exhilarating experience at sea. Including bowsprit, luxury charter yacht GERMANIA NOVA measures an impressive 60m in overall length, and carries 1,200m2 of sail area.”
