X-Yachts Regatta

Sydney Wharf Marina hosts X-Yachts annual regatta on Sydney Harbour

Despite the warnings of gales and snow, X-Yachts from Denmark held their annual regatta in a blustery northerly on Sydney Harbour.

With dark clouds and rain threatening, the fleet of X-Yachts revelled in the 30-knot winds where the Danish designed and built luxury yachts enjoyed a day of tight racing.

In the racing division, veteran Sydney sailor, Tony Kirby took out first place after a duking it up with Ian Box sailing his well campaigned X-442 Toy Box.

The older X-442 proved to be a tough competitor to Kirby who was sailing his newer X-41 one design, Patrice 6. The first result for Kirby was gained after a count back as both yachts tied for first.

The Family division was won by the smallest X-Yacht, the X-34 chartered by a composite out-of-town crew from Darwin, Mackay and Brisbane, with Solveig, the well sailed X-37 taking out second place, despite being first home.

After racing, the fleet then went to Sydney Wharf Marina where the yachts rafted up next to the Ripples restaurant.

The presentation of the prizes was conducted by the Danish Consul General, Michael Hansen, who bravely took to the racing as well, despite the threatening weather. Also on hand was Rob McGrath from Sydney’s newest boat service centre at Rozelle, Sydney City Marine, who was also the lead sponsor of the regatta.

Ripples provided an excellent facility, serving post racing canapés and drinks for the crews that preceded a magnificent three-course sit down dinner.

Exclusive up-market Danish jewellery house Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen showcased their wares and one lucky owner also received a contemporary bracelet as a lucky door prize.

Australian X-Yacht distributor Andrew Parkes was delighted with the day and commented on how close the racing was…”the owners had a great time – I know we did – and they were not giving any quarter at the mark roundings – it was a very exciting day, capped off with a sumptuous dinner!”

Sydney Wharf Marina is a first class facility on the doorstop of Sydney’s CBD, and is unique in that it offers strata title berths for sale, without any link-up to the adjoining apartments (there are only a handful of berths left!).
